♠ What Is Twisted Fate

Twisted Fate is a play by post roleplaying game. We are set in the modern day in the city of Los Angeles, but feature an alternative history to the world as we know it. Before the current earth was an 'earth V1', featuring humans with a strong connection to the elements that allowed them to use amazing powers. Unfortunately, those very powers led to the destruction of the kingdoms, forcing the personifications of Fate and Destiny to begin the earth anew. Unfortunately, the spirits of elemental humans who died in the last war are now beginning to take new hosts and awaken in modern day Los Angeles as the fight between Fate and Destiny begins once again. You can read the complete plot HERE.

New players begin their life as civilians. While they may or may not have the spirit of an elemental human, they have no idea of what is about to unfold. Previous monsters and events have been hurriedly covered up, meaning that almost all new characters just starting out will have no idea of what is happening in LA's underground. The Impedio Society works to hide what is happening from the rest of the world, preventing new characters from having pre-existing knowledge.

Twisted Fate has no word count, but does expect posts to be understandable. Players tend to match the word count they are given, but once again it's not mandatory. Posts tend to range from two hundred to five hundred words, with a three hundred and fifty word average. This varies a lot by player, and some players will write a lot more.

Each player begins with five character slots. New members are encouraged to focus on one or two before going crazy with the characters, and slots past five can be purchased for residue, the site's currency. A new character will not be accepted until the previous character has made at least one or two in-character posts.

The game is death enabled within events, but character death is a fairly rare occurrence for those who do not want it.

Twisted Fate features a wide variety of activity levels. Some members will post several times a day, while other members might only post once a week. Most members are expected to post at least once a week, and the absolute minimum is once a month.

♠ What Sort Of Character Should I Make?

Twisted Fate is set in modern day Los Angeles, which means that any sort of person who might be found in Los Angeles could be a character. We have students, workers, children and the elderly, so there's no one character type that takes precedence. The games tone ranges from humorous to dramatic, but when it comes to character creation, the staff looks for plausibility. Characters can be strange or odd, but we do ask that they be reasonable for the setting. A character who speaks twelve languages, is a prince, and has three degrees isn't reasonable for a site based on the real world.

Similarly, character backgrounds should be reasonable as well. Don't be concerned if you get pended, as a lot of the time the staff will simply look for a bit more detail if something has been touched on but not explained. Character backgrounds that deal with potentially offensive themes (abuse, suicide, murder, mental illness) will be looked over more closely than others in order to ensure that they are respectful about subject matter.

First characters should not have any understanding of the world's secret history, and should not have any attachment to Fate, Destiny, any of their monsters, or the Impedio Society. When a player has an established character already, they will have the option to make characters who are either a part of the Impedio Society, or have past involvement with Fate and Destiny, but both of these are pending staff approval and extreme scrutiny.

♠ What Is Residue?

Twisted Fate's currency is known as residue. Residue can be gained in a variety of ways, the main three being finishing a thread, participating in events, and posting in roleplays. It can also be gained from contests and going above and beyond in your profiles. Your residue is listed in THIS THREAD, and is tracked by the moderaters and admins. Residue can be spent to purchase cards that have largely out of character effects (such as granting an extra thread slot or saving your character a spot in an event), or they can be spent on in-character residue packs. These packs contain a variety of upgrades for your character, and are used to help advance your character through the site plot.

♠ What About Canons?

Canons are done much differently on Twisted Fate then they are on other sites. Canon spots represent the spirits of those who were involved in the last Kingdom War, and are divided up by their kingdom of birth. Each canon has their own power, connection, and story. However, players do not choose a canon for themselves. All characters begin without a canon, and then will be assigned a canon after participating in events and completing threads. When you are finally placed in a canon role, you will not be notified, but will have a chance of being claimed (to a kingdom) or identified (to a role) through events. Once a character has been claimed or identified, the next step is awakening, which involves the character becoming aware of their canon and gaining new powers. Becoming awakened is a much more involved step, and can take quite some time.

♠ What Else Should I Know?

Twisted Fate runs roleplay swaps about once a month. These swaps take open signups, and match up players with those they haven't roleplayed before for a chance at extra residue. You can find information about ongoing roleplay swaps, as well as the rules in THIS BOARD.

Activity checks are run once a month on Twisted Fate, and begin on the 9th. While the type of check might vary, the most common type of check requires you to make an in-character post for every two characters you have, and then post a list of the posts made in the activity check thread. Activity checks are highlighted on the recent news section of the site near the top, and include residue rewards for the most active posters.

When your activity dips or you know you'll be away, players are expected to leave a message in the LEAVE OF ABSENCE FORUM. This serves to let people you're roleplaying with know what's going on, and helps the staff know you haven't just vanished. If you have a reasonable LOA posted at the start of an activity check, then you'll be exempted from that activity check. Emergency LOA's are also understandable, and can be used to bypass an activity check. LOA's that take up less than half of a checks time, or those that are posted late in an activity check (but are not emergencies) will not count.
